Our Achievements
Summer Camp
Every year Please Help Me teams up with private donors and local organizations and provides a Summer Camp for children in needy areas of Montreal (Roxboro Pierrefonds). The camp runs for 8 weeks with a mix of boys and girls resulting in approximately 60 children, ranging from ages 5 to 14, attending the camp.
Sports (Soccer League)
During our Summer camp we will divide the kids by age and have a soccer league. This is a favorite among the children who all participate throughout the summer.
Family Support
Serving in an area with low-income families, we occasionally get requests for assistance. Although we unfortunately can’t possibly come to aid everyone who requests at the same time, here are a few examples of help we have provided.
- We bought a fully electric wheelchair for a woman with a small child. We first noticed her when knocking on her 3rd floor apartment door and it took her a long time to get to the door. There she was crawling on the floor with her young child just behind. After spending time with her we contacted several donors and bought her a beautiful red electric wheelchair. It was a beautiful thing to see her a couple of weeks later on the streets with her child on the wheelchair with groceries in her basket. We also had the landlord re-locate her to the ground floor and built her a ramp for easy access.
- While filling out an application form for her child to attend our summer camp we noticed that this woman’s eyesight was really poor as she struggled to fill in the form. When questioned about her eyesight she replied by showing us a prescription for glasses she had been carrying for over 4 months in her purse. She needed glasses but could not afford them. We decided instantly to go with her and get her new glasses. The smile on her face when she put them on was priceless needless to say she was very grateful.
- A single mother of 3 kids who had finished her studies to become a nurse needed to work as a nurse assistant for 3 months as a prerequisite to obtain her final papers so she could enter the labor market. Unfortunately, the 3 months she would have had to be on her training was without pay as a student. This meant that she would have to leave her apartment and separate the family into different apartments with other family and or friends since she could not afford the rent. When we heard of her worries, we decided to pay her 3 months’ rent so she could stay in her own apartment with her family. Today she enjoys a good paying job as a nurse and was able to move into a better location.
Christmas Outreach
Every year at Christmas time we distribute approximately 100 food baskets and or a large turkey. We also buy or collect gifts from partners and have the parents of the children come by the center to pick out toys for their children. We have a variety of toys we usually separate by age, and the parents get to bring the gifts home and wrap them to put under the tree for their children.
